How to Select Drumstick

Selecting your Drumsticks may be more involved than you think.First off, what type of band will you

be playing in primarily? This will help you select the correct size. If it's a heavy metal band or a marching

band, you'll need thicker drumsticks to withstand the heavy abuse they will take. Drumsticks come in all different sizes. Larger drumsticks sizes are normally a 5B or 2B size (2B is larger) and will usually last much longer than thinner sticks. If you play in a jazz band or light volumed pop band, you will want to go with a smaller stick size. Either a 7A (very thin) or a 5A (standard) will suffice. Of course, if you play many styles, you may find that a 5B is the most suited for you because a 5B drumstick is versatile. Of course there are also custom drumstick sizes that vary due to the artist's individual custom specifications (found under "signature drumsticks").

Are your drumsticks straight? When you get ready to choose / purchase new drumsticks from a store,

it is important to roll them. Do this by putting them on a flat countertop and gently rolling them.

If they wobble, you may want to select another pair. While a slight wobble won't really hurt anything,

you will notice the feel of greatly warped drumsticks in your hand. Avoid those at all costs.

What type of tips for the drumsticks? In the old days, there were only wood tip drumsticks.

The problem was that they often chipped and spintered away with wear. So a gentleman by the

name of Joe Calato developed a nylon tip for drumsticks that are now one of the standards in drumming.

Will you be playing hard? Soft? Medium volume? This also helps determine the right drumsticks

when trying to pick the right pair. The harder you play, the beefier the stick you need to absorb the shock and abuse they will receive. If you're playing in a quieter setting, smaller/lighter drumsticks give you just that right touch.

How do the drumsticks feel?This is one of the most important questions about drumsticks and

probably one of the main determiners in how drummers go about buying drumsticks. There are many different drumstick sizes so it can be difficult to choose. Ultimately, we want them to feel good in our hands. Drumsticks become a part of us when we play. They are an extension of your limbs and they much "feel" right or we won't be comfortable behind the drums.

Varnished or Lacquered?If you sweat a lot, you may want to buy drumsticks that don't have a

slippery coating on them. Drummers that sweat profusely tend to even sand their sticks down with sandpaper

so that it helps them get a better grip. Otherwise, varnished sticks not only look good but they tend to give the

average drummer a nice subtle gripping feel. There are also rubber grip models in different drumstick sizes.

How to Tune a Drum

Things You'll Need:

• Drum Sets
• Drum Tension Key
• Drumsticks

Instructions

Tuning the Snare Drum

1. Turn the snares off. The snare drum cannot be tuned correctly with interference from the snare sounds.
2. Tune the top head first. Turn each lug clockwise to increase the tension of the head and make the drum's pitch higher.
3. Tune one lug, and then tune the lug on its opposite side (180 degrees away). The drum tunes better when you don't tune these lugs in a circular sequence.
4. Continue this pattern so that you never tune two lugs in a row that are less than a few inches from each other.
5. Repeat this sequence with the bottom head. Be careful not to tune it too high, because these heads tend to break easily.
6. Test the pitch of each lug when finished by lightly playing about 1 inch away from the lug with a drumstick.
7. Make sure all the lugs have equal pitch. At this point, your drum should be tuned.

Tuning the Bass Drum

1. Tune the front head first. You shouldn't spend too much time doing this, because this head doesn't have much impact on the sound of the drum.
2. Tune each lug of the back head (the head that your pedal plays against) in the sequence explained in the two sections above.
3. Make sure your drum is tuned neither too high nor too low. Bass drum sounds really depend on the style of music you're playing and how much impact the drum has with the group you play with.

Tuning the Toms

1. Tune the bottom head of each tom-tom first.
2. Use the same tuning sequence as the snare technique, tuning each lug and then its opposite.
3. Tune the top head when the bottom head is finished. This head is where the pitch is generated, so it's very important to have an idea of what pitch you want to tune to.
4. Check each lug's pitch so that it matches the others by lightly playing 1 inch away from the lug with a drumstick.

Tips & Warnings

• Allow yourself plenty of time to tune a drum set. This is not an activity you can pull off 20 minutes before a gig or session.

my best friend just died this morning.. :'(

Kuci was his name. My best friend. Eventhough we only knew for a few weeks but he left a big hole inside my heart. Not only mine but my family to. Especially my lil sister. He died tragically in an accident early morning. 27/5/2010. Imagine this, he woke me up almost every morning. He would come to me n start rubbing his body against my leg. He even licked my toes. Haha.. When my parents were out to work, he accompanied me watching TV, had lunch together, even took a nap together. He loves lo to sleep on my shirt that was folded on the floor. He was a very lovely and independent cat. My family loved him so much. It was a huge loss. his toys and everything, we kept it nicely in a cupboard. Left untouched. He will always be in our memories. I'm speechless when I saw his dead body lying on the road just beside my house. I cried all the way to work like mad. And my lil sister kept on crying everytime she tought bout him. I think that is all i need to say. Whatever it is, life must go on. We'll miss you.. With full of love from me and my family. R.I.P.
